A Pathway Between Faith and Nature

The Way of Saint Francis Caracciolo (Cammino San Francesco Caracciolo) is a pilgrimage route steeped in the history and spirituality of the 17th century, offering modern pilgrims a unique experience of religious and cultural tourism. This itinerary winds through some of the most captivating locations in central Italy, from Loreto to Naples, following in the footsteps of St. Francis Caracciolo, the patron saint of cooks.

Historical Route

In the spring of 1608, St. Francis Caracciolo, returning from a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Loreto in the Marche region, stopped in his hometown of Villa Santa Maria in Abruzzo to greet his family. Continuing along the ancient transhumance routes, he finally reached Agnone in Molise, known as the city of bells. Here, while staying at the convent of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri, he was struck by violent fevers. On June 4 of the same year, the saint passed away, already venerated as a figure of great sanctity. His body was brought back to Naples, the seat of the Clerics Regular Minor, but the heart of St. Francis remained in Agnone, hidden in the church of the convent where, according to tradition, it still lies today.

The Way Today

Today, the Way of St. Francis Caracciolo spans a route of 550 kilometers, connecting Loreto to Naples. This path is part of the broader context of the "Paths of Europe" and "Parks and Ecclesiastical Cultural Sites," offering an integrated experience of religious tourism. Pilgrims or hikers who venture along this route can immerse themselves in an extraordinary blend of nature, gastronomy, and spirituality.

A Journey for Devotees and Hikers

The Way of St. Francis Caracciolo is much more than a simple devotional pilgrimage. Walking "with short and slow steps," travelers can rediscover the genius loci, the authentic spirit of these places, savoring not only the beauty of the landscapes but also the authenticity of the local culture.

A Path Between History and Spirituality

Following in the footsteps of St. Francis Caracciolo, the Way offers a unique opportunity for reflection and contemplation as one crosses picturesque landscapes and encounters communities that have kept the traditions linked to the saint alive. This journey represents an experience of spiritual renewal, an inner journey that mirrors the path of life itself.
